Custom Upright Headstones in Hudson, WI & the Twin Cities

A gravestone in a cemetery with a cross engraved on the left side, inscribed with 'IHS.' The main headstone reads 'VENESS' and has the names 'D. BRUCE,' born in 1951, and 'KATHRYN A.,' born in 1954. There is a dove with a ribbon below the names, with the date 'JAN. 18, 1975.' The base of the gravestone says, 'It's About The Journey.'

An upright headstone — also called an upright monument or memorial — is a granite memorial that stands vertically on a base, giving you the most room for names, dates, lettering, and artwork. At Midwest Memorials in Hudson, WI, we design custom upright headstones, single and companion, for families across the Twin Cities and Western Wisconsin.

  • Single upright memorials are slightly smaller and are designed to honor one individual.

Companion upright memorials are larger, allowing space for additional names, text, and design elements to memorialize two individuals together.

  • The overall size of a upright memorial is limited only by budget and the rules and regulations of the cemetery. Memorials also cannot be larger than the burial space typicall; a standard burial space is 4 feet wide and a two-grave lot is typically 8 feet wide.

For individual upright memorials, the most common and standard size is 24” L x 6” W x 20”H but can be made larger or smaller.

For companion upright memorials, the most common and standard size is 36” L x 6” W x 20” H. Companion memorials can range in size more broadly than individual memorials and lend themselves to creative use of the burial space.

  • Upright memorials cost more than lawn-level markers because they're larger and use more granite, and include a granite base. Most uprights start around $3,000 depending on granite color and final sizing. We'll work with you to design a memorial within your budget.
